Functional neurological disorders clinic

Functional neurologic disorders (FND) are commonly encountered in general neurology practice. FND are characterised by many different and diverse symptoms.

Symptoms may be “never the same” (variable) or may contrast (incompatible) with human anatomy and pathophysiology of a known neurological or other disorder.

Symptoms are highly disabling and involuntary produced. Yet FND can be improved with expert professional care and as a rule at least temporarily improved by the patient, depending on the patient’s ability to reduce attention to them.

There is no consistent association between FND and either posttraumatic emotional stress or psychiatric disease. As FND could be due to brain dysfunction the possibility of normal brain function and complete brain recovery is high.

In our clinics we offer expert, empathetic and comprehensive care:

  • Detailed and longitudinal approach to neurological history and physical examination
  • Review of alternative diagnosis and investigations to date
  • Exclude traditional neurological disorders as appropriate especially as FND may occur with or without concurrent other neurologic disorders.
  • Offer a positive experience and convey a positive diagnosis and prognosis

We offer Multidisciplinary treatment focusing on:

  • Pharmacological
  • Psychological – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Physiotherapy /occupational therapy
  • Social work
  • Liaison with psychiatry
